Marital tensions
Friends from Reading attended an online Quaker Family History Society talk by Chris Skidmore, Conflict over Quaker marriages in seventeenth-century Reading.
“Between about 1685 and 1715 there were two antagonistic worshipping groups of Quakers in the town. From the records that they left, we can see that one of the causes of the separation was a disagreement over the role of women’s meetings in Quaker marriages: there were also disputes over the proceedings in particular marriages.”
Chris, formally of Reading Meeting, is the author of Quakers and their Meeting Houses (Historic England / Liverpool University Press, 2021).
