Sanctuary meeting
Reading Quaker meeting is now a Sanctuary meeting that is committed to building a culture of welcome for newcomers to Britain.
Reading itself has become a City of Sanctuary and on Wednesday 21 February is hosting an event ‘We Welcome’ at 7 pm at the Reading Council Chambers, Civic Centre. More details are here: https://reading.cityofsanctuary.org/
Quakers in Britain launched the ‘Sanctuary Everywhere’ initiative in 2017. More details are here: https://www.quaker.org.uk/our-work/social-justice/migration including the resource ‘Being a Sanctuary Meeting: Questions and answers’.
Sanctuary in this context is adapted from the definition offered by the Quaker Jim Corbett (who co-founded the Sanctuary Churches Movement in the US) – we understand a Sanctuary Meeting as a protective community for people whose human rights are being violated.
