Henley’s Quaker Heritage
Whatever the weather – from Frost Fairs to Global Warming
at Henley Meeting House, 45 Northfield End, Henley RG9 2JJ
Saturday 14th September 2.00 – 5.00pm
Henley’s Meeting House and garden are opening to the public as part of the national scheme to open public buildings of importance to our heritage, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of George Fox and to show an exhibition contrasting the “Little Ice Age” of Fox’s life and the challenge of global warming today.
The 17th century marked Britain’s coldest century and the birth of the Quaker movement. Our exhibition shows how the weather affected the life of George Fox and illustrates how the freezing of the Thames brought both entertainment and hardship. You will be able to play frost fair skittles and consume frost fair gingerbread and other 17th century enticements as well as consider how our lifestyle today can be changed to reduce the danger of global warming.
